Hi Stampers and welcome to another Stamping with Friends blog hop! Today we’re featuring a technique – Embossing with Dies. It’s not something you probably think of when you get a new set of dies. But it is an excellent way to get more use out of your dies..
Today’s Project – Embossing with Dies
My card features the Darling Details bundle. The stamp set is a two-step stamp set and I was pleasantly surprised to see how easy it was to line up the stamps. Sometimes I struggle with lining them up! I wanted some dimension for my flowers so I cut out 2 extra of each die and glued them together to get that dimension.
I used that same technique for the sentiment. I layered 3 pieces of Basic White and then fussy cut them. I like this technique because the elements are more solid and you don’t get wrinkles as you do with dimensionals. But I still love my dimensionals because they are a quick and easy way to give your card some dimension!
So, how do you emboss with dies? For this card, I used the two frame dies from Darling Details dies. I taped them together using some washi tape so they would shift when running them through the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss die-cutting machine. Then you build your sandwich. Start with the platform without the thin wafer plate. Add a clear cutting plate. Then, add the die face up, the material you’re cutting, a silicone craft sheet, and finally, a clear cutting plate. If this doesn’t give you a deep enough impression, add a cardstock shim.
I’m sure you read how to make the sandwich and are wondering how it doesn’t cut the paper! Well, the silicone craft sheet is the secret sauce in the sandwich. It flexes and prevents the dies from cutting through.
Can you see the detail on this card? So pretty! I chose to use the de-bossed side of the cardstock. The embossed side is also very pretty but would have overwhelmed the other elements on the card. This is more subtle but adds so much interest.
Today’s Color Palette
This card features a new color, Moody Mauve. When I first saw it I thought it was a little dull. But the more I play with it, the more I love it! I think it looks great with Blackberry Bliss and Granny Apple Green.
Embossing with Dies – Darling Details Dies
This die set has a lot of potential for embossing with of these dies. As I mentioned, I used the frame dies for my card. You could also use, the flowers and the leaves to make an interesting background with embossing with dies. Finally, you could create a sweet card just using the dies. I just love that many of the die sets are including dies that don’t cut elements from the stamp set and can be used without the stamp set. Makes them more versatile.
Embossing with Dies – Darling Details stamp set
As I mentioned this is a two-step stamp set which is very easy to line up. I used Blackberry Bliss on my flower stamping off for the base layer and then used it full strength for the details. I did the same with Granny Apple Green for the leaves and stems.
Embossing with Dies – Sparkly Gems
These gems are new and they are very sparkly. I used a few of the small silver ones around the sentiment. I tend to buy more embellishments from the annual catalog than anything else. I love to have options when I’m designing cards!
Make the Inside Pretty
Another feature of this stamp set is that you get a lot of texture with it, in addition to the detail on top. You can really see it in the image of the inside of the card. There are differences in the color in the stamped-off base image. It really makes the image more interesting.
Don’t Forget the Envelope
For a change, I decided to stamp the image on the envelope flap instead of on the front. I love adding an element of the card on the envelope to make the card even more special.
I hope my card inspires you to try embossing with dies. It’s such a fun technique and once you try it, you’ll never look at dies the same way. It really stretches your creativity!
Now it’s time to see some other examples of this technique. So, grab a beverage, sit back and relax and enjoy the hop.
