Another Technique Tuesday with Crafty Collaborations, this one is focusing on frames. I’m using the stand-alone dies Fabulous Frames with the Season of Chic bundle to demonstrate how frames can really make a card. Frames focus the eye and tie the card front together. The anchor the card elements to give it cohesion. Almost everyone uses frames on their cards without conscious thought. If you add a layer to the card front, then you’ve added a frame made by the difference between the base card and the layer.
Today’s Project – Fabulous Frames with Season of Chic
The card started with a Soft Succulent base. Then, the frame was cut using the Fabulous Frames dies and attached using Adhesive Foam Strips to really pop it up. Adhesive sheets make it easy to attach the Gold Foil element. If you read my blog regularly, you know how much I love the adhesive sheets. They make it so easy to get those bits off because they stick to the sheet as you remove the backing!
You’ll notice that I put the framed image at an angle. This adds interest to the card. I especially like this technique on vintage cards. There’s something about the angle with the softness that appeals to me.
Today’s Color Palette
The color palette comes directly from the Texture Chic DSP. This paper and these colors have such a soft, vintage feel to them. I especially love the way Petal Pink and Soft Suede complement each other. I am not one who makes vintage cards, but the color palette in this paper really inspires me.
Fabulous Frames
Check out these dies. They were one of the first items on my new catalog wish list. You can’t see the detail in this image, but the oval has stitches and embossing around it. And the two sets of corner frames are very different from each other. One has straight lines in the cutout, while the other has swirls.
Season of Chic Bundle
I’ve used this set previously in this post. I love that it has a variety of elements. For example, I used the hatched image in Gold Foil for my card. Choosing a different color or with a different DSP would totally change the look of the card. Plus there are elements for Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter which makes it a very versatile set.
The flowers were stamped with Petal Pink for the base and Soft Suede stamped off for the line detail. I tried a few different color schemes for the two-step flowers. I tried Flirty Flamingo with Petal Pink. And, although they looked great together, the flowers were too vibrant for this card. Then I tried stamped off Petal Pink for the base with full strength Petal Pink for the detail. Those flowers look too washed out. So, I thought I’d try the Soft Suede stamped off on a Petal Pink base and it worked!
The other trick I used was to slightly bend the sentiment so it fit the curve of the watercolor wash stamp. I love how that came out! Since there is no die for that watercolor image, I fussy cut it. I’ve seen other samples where the image is stamped on a larger die cut. And, I thought about that, but I didn’t want a bigger image or that much blank space in this framed image.
One final trick is to stack the flowers on 3 levels of dimensions. I only wanted one ‘glue’ point for each flower. And because I wanted to tuck the leaves behind the flowers, I knew I was going to have the flowers at the same height as the frame. So, 3 stacked dimensionals did the trick.
Make the INside Pretty
As you can see, I also used a frame on the inside. The strips of Gold Foil frame the strips of DSP and together they frame the inside of the card.
Don’t Forget the Envelope
The envelope really showcases the Texture Chic DSP. Although it’s also on the card, it doesn’t stand out because there is so much else going on. But, on this envelope, you can really see the beautiful pattern on this DSP.
I hope you enjoyed my Fabulous Frames and Season of Chic card. I love these so much you’re sure to see more! But now, it’s time to see what the other members of Crafty Collaborations have in store for you. You’re sure to get lots of inspiration on how to use frames in your card making. So, sit back, grab a beverage, and enjoy the hop!
It’s almost time for the July – December Mini Catalog. Let me know here if you’d like me to pop one in the mail for you.
