Today’s project uses the Hippest Hippos for a virtual Pride Parade with Crafty Collaborations. We are a group of international demonstrators who collaborate together on blog hops like this one, monthly tutorials which are available for free with a $50 purchase, virtual catalog launches, and class planner to inspire you and each other to express your creativity.
Today’s Project – Hippest Hippos
As I was looking around for inspiration, I found this cute image of one of the hippos from the Hippest Hippos dancing on a tightrope between two tubs of flowers and I knew I had my inspiration for this virtual Pride Parade! I’m just sorry that I don’t remember where I saw it so that I can give credit to the original designer.
Hippest Hippo Stamp Set
The Hippest Hippos Stamp Set has these 3 cute hippos and 4 great sayings. And the best part? It’s free with a $50 purchase before taxes and shipping because it’s a Sale-a-bration set. Sala-a-bration is a twice-yearly celebration from Stampin’ Up! There’s a separate catalog and every item in it is free with a set purchase price! So you get more product when you buy product – WIN-WIN.
Hippo Dies
The Hippo Dies were perfect to make this card. The two tubs hold a rainbow of flowers that were cut using the flower dies. Since the dies cut two flowers at a time, I could get two rainbows from the same die just by switching the colors up in terms of the rainbow.
The pink umbrella is just so cute. And there, is no need to stamp. The die makes the umbrella ‘ribs’ which can be colored in a darker color to make them pop. In this case, I used Dark Polished Pink Blends for the ribs and Light Polished Pink for the ribs. The handle is colored using Light Basic Black Blends.
After stamping the Hippo using Momento Tuxedo Black ink and coloring it with Smoky Slate and Light Basic Black Bends, I cut it using the die. Easy Peasy.
I also used the dies to cut out two tubs and colored them with Bermuda Bay Blends.
Today’s Color Palette
I wanted this card to SHOUT with color! And, I think I accomplished this. First, the rainbow has 6 colors. Then I added in some pink & blue for the gender by coloring the Hippo with a Balmy Blue tutu and the umbrella with Polished Pink. Bermuda Bay on the tubs makes them stand out. And the Pool Party Sky and Granny Apple Green ground are just the right color. Notice that they were applied with the Blending Brushes and are not uniform in color. This gives them a more natural feel. The Night of Navy base grounds all that color against a strong neutral background.
I cut a few pieces of grass using the dies to add some interest to the grass area and attached them using liquid glue. The tightrope is made from Starry Sky twine as is the banner that holds the sentiment. They were attached using mini glue dots. The tubs were attached using dimensionals as were the flowers, the hippo, and the umbrella.
Alphabest Bundle
I used the Alphabest stamp set to create the sentiment. I shortened You Be You to U B U to make it fit. When I first saw the Alphabest bundle I wasn’t sure about buying it. But I think you’re going to see a lot of it from me. It was perfect for this card. And I can see making some cards using punched images to make a pattern or stamping a pattern with one of the non-alphabetic stamps to make a background. Lots of ideas here!
The sentiment was hung from the Starry Sky rope and attached with dimensionals. And, then I added the bling. Each flower in the tub has a 2020-2022 In Color Opal round as its center. They probably don’t show well in the image but they look finished in person. Finally, I colored pretty much everything with Wink of Stella – the tutu, the umbrella, the tubs, and the flowers. This card sparkles!
Make the Inside Pretty
After lining the inside with a Basic White panel, I added a rainbow of large flowers on the left side. I left the centers blank to eliminate some bulk.
Don’t Forget the Envelope
I copied the inside of the envelope with two differences – I used the smaller flowers from the Hippo dies and I reversed the rainbow order. I didn’t add centers to the flowers because I didn’t think they’d hold up in transit!
I hope you enjoyed today’s project as much as I did while creating it! But now, it’s time for some more inspiration. So, grab a beverage, sit back and relax, and enjoy the hop! You’re sure to find a lot of inspiration!
