Today’s post is supposed to be all about quilting. I was excited about this post because my mom was a fabulous quilter. The pre-school my daughter went to had a big fundraiser every year. My mom had the kids draw a picture on white muslin and then she made a quilt out of the pictures. They were the biggest auction both years. The second year, the kids made a second set of pictures so my mom could make her a quilt. She slept with that quilt until it was threadbare and she was leaving for college. I have such fond memories of her quilts. I’ve chosen to use the Texture Chic suite on my quilt card.
Today’s Project – Texture Chic
I used the seashell pattern from the Texture Chic Specialty DSP which has gold dots on the other side. So, my first not quite good choice was I picked a distressed pattern. Quilts look best when the quilt pattern shines which means using regular patterns. Although to be fair, you can see the pattern better in this closeup.
I cut the DSP into one-inch squares. Then I cut each square on a diagonal and glued it to a Basic White square so that I could play with it a little. Next, I glued the one-inch squares to a 4″ x 4″ Basic White square. Finally, I glued that square to a 4 1/8″ X 4 1/8″ square. Now if you have great hand-eye coordination, you probably don’t need that many layers. But I kept disturbing the layout so decided to do some gluing.
For the card front. I used a full-size Petal Pink layer so that I could hide the back of the ribbon. I needed the ribbon to hide an uneven edge on the quilt square. Then I added a ‘cheater’ bow’ which means I glued the ribbon on, used the bow maker to make a bow, and attached the bow on top of the ribbon with a couple of glue dots.
Then I started to work o the focal image which I cut from Petal Pink cardstock and Gold Foil. I glued two of them down and used dimensionals on the other.
I finished off the card with a heat embossed sentiment framed in Gold Foil. So now I’m admiring my finished card and I realized I didn’t do the quilting part! I missed using the Stitched Greenery die which would have given it a quilted look. Oh, well, it’s still a pretty card.
Today’s Color Palette
The main two colors are Petal Pink and Gold Foil. However, the DSP does have a lighter version of Soft Sued in it. I do love the Petal Pink and Gold Foil together.
Make the Inside Pretty
I think the Texture Chic Specialty DSP is so gorgeous that I used two strips on the inside of the card. I framed them with a couple of strips of the Gold Foil. At this point, with all the layers on the front, the popped up sea shell and the layers on the inside, this card is too heavy to mail unless you use a special Butterfly stamp.
What’s a butterfly stamp? The greeting card industry lobbied the US post office to publish a non-machinable stamp that doesn’t go through the machines. So it can be lumpy or heavy (although there is a weight limit) and it’s just fine. It costs a little more, but is worth it for these kinds of cards!
Don’t forget the envelope
If you’re a regular reader of my blog, then you probably guessed that I decorated the envelop flap with that same DSP. It’s just so gorgeous.
I hope you enjoyed my attempt at a quilt. But now it’s time to grab a beverage and hop along to see the quilts that other members of Crafty Collaborations have for you. Enjoy the hop!
