On the last Sunday of the month, Crafty Collaboration has a blog hop where we show whatever we’ve been working on. I love this because it lets me share projects that don’t fit any theme. For example, today’s project was inspired as I was looking for something for a different hop. I really wanted to make an Explosion Popup card. But, I didn’t want to make the traditional flower version. And then Taco Fiesta was laying on my desk. The light bulb over my head went off and so today I’m sharing my Taco Fiesta Explosion Popup card!
Today’s Project – Taco Fiesta Explosion Popup
On the outside, it looks like an envelope. I used a sheet from the Delicate Desert DSP for the background. And I fussy cut the buildings and cactus from the Ready to Ride DSP. I thought this was the perfect front for this card. You’re looking for a diner and you have three to choose from!
After cutting the DSP to remove the motorcycles, I also colored the buildings to make them look more realistic. The red pepper on the sign is from the Taco Fiesta stamp set, colored in Poppy Parade, and then colored with Fine Tip Glue. Yes, you can color with Fine Tip Glue. It makes the surface all shiny. Although you have to be patient to let it dry.
Ready to Ride DSP
Even if you aren’t in to motorcycles, you still need the paper. It’s gorgeous, especially the black patterns because they are shiny! I used the sheet with the buildings and found 3 where I could easily remove the motorcycle! I also could have used the single building image that was already colored. But, I had a story in my head about a couple on a road trip where they haven’t seen a building for miles and now they find three and have to pick one!
Delicate Desert DSP
This paper is also beautiful. The Calypso Coral and Soft Succulent ‘scene’ sheets are gorgeous. and the patterned paper was just perfect for this card as you’ll see in a bit.
Today’s Color Palette – Taco Fiesta Explosion Popup
In addition to the desert colors on the front, I want bright, vibrant colors on the inside because the stamp set is perfect for those kinds of colors.
Make the Inside Pretty – Taco Fiesta Explosion Popup
So how did I do with making the inside pretty? Pretty amazing is what I say! And once you get the hang of folding the side, it’s not really hard to make with all that’s going on. I used a tutorial from Sam Calcott in the UK. You can find it here. She made a traditional version with a birthday cake and another version with flowers. Thanks for the inspiration, Sam!
I practiced folding with pieces of copy paper until I had it right. This saved me from wrecking the DSP with my first mostly failed attempts. I also used the scoring blade on my trimmer to make sure my folds were the correct width and straight. Straight is important and can be difficult with bulky DSP.
Taco Fiesta Explosion POPUP – Close Up
As you can see, I stamped and colored most of the images in the stamp set. I colored two pinatas because I wanted one on the top and one on the bottom. However, the one on the top got his ears crinkled when the card was folded so he was moved to one of the shelves.
The images were all colored with the blends using the brightest colors that permeate the Southwest and Mexico. Think Granny Apple Green, Polished Pink, Coastal Cabana, and Mango Melody! After coloring the peppers I add Fine Tip Glue to make them really pop.
Taco Fiesta Explosion Popup – Side
This side view shows you the folds. And, as I said earlier, once you got the hang of it and used a scoring tool, it was pretty easy to do. One other tip is that if the paper splits, use some Scotch magic tape. It mends the tear and disappears.
You can also see the sentiment detail here. I stamped the confetti from Taco Fiesta all over a piece of Basic White cardstock using Daffodil Delight ink stamped off. Then I stamped the Birthday sentiment using Calypso Coral ink. I was trying to figure out a mat when I saw this leftover piece of DSP from some other project that made the perfect mat because the pattern was subtle.
Taco Fiesta
Isn’t this stamp set just so much fun??? My only disappointment with it is there are no matching dies and so I had to fussy cut so much. But since they are mostly straight lines, it wasn’t so bad. And the sentiments are so hilarious. I do hope it carries over!
I hope you liked my Taco Fiesta Explosion Popup card and that it inspires you to try something new! Now it’s time for more inspiration from the other hoppers from Crafty Collaborations. So, grab a beverage, sit back and relax, and enjoy the hop!
