Today’s blog hop celebrates Yom Kippur which is the Jewish Day of Atonement and one of the Jewish High Holidays. Yom Kippur is a day of fasting, refraining from work, and attending services. Crafty Collaborations is all about #diversity in everything we do, and that includes making projects that celebrate diversity like making cards for a religious celebration that is part of another faith. Of course, as I’ve mentioned many times, Judaism is not quite foreign to me given that my sister-in-law and nieces are Jewish.
Today’s Project
One of the problems with #diversity is that Stampin’ Up! doesn’t always have stamps & dies for the projects. However, whenever they do, I grab them and put them in my stash. And for this hop, I used a Star of David from a Hero Arts set that I’ve had for a while.
However, there are plenty of Stampin’ Up! products used in this card and a couple of techniques. So, let’s get to it. The base of the card is Starry Sky which is topped with a 4″ X 5 1/4″ Basic White panel.
The elements on the card front are all symbols of Yom Kipper – the book (or scroll) of atonement, the candles, and the Star of David. I floated the candles and the star on clouds from the Waves dies. And I wrote the Hebrew greeting using a Night of Navy Stampin Write Marker on a vellum scroll. I made the scroll by wrapping the vellum around a pencil. The scroll ends nicely hid the line of glue I attached it with.
Today’s Color Palette
Blues are traditional Jewish colors and made a perfect background for this Yom Kippur card. Daffodil delight was used for the flames on the candles and Balmy Blue for the candles themselves.
The topmost layer is 3 7/8″ x 4 1/8′ Basic White that I used a blending brush to create a starry blue background. The first color I added was Balmy Blue and I put it on the entire panel. I followed that with Pacific Point but was more selective about where I put it since it’s such a strong color. Starry Sky was next, followed by Night of Navy.
Once all the color was on, I decided it needed more. So, I lightly spritzed it with water and a spritzer. Then I watched one of the World Card Making videos and saw someone mixed the White Pearlized Enamel Effects with some water and splattered it using a water painter. Brilliant! So, I did it on this card, too. Finally, I liked the background.
If you didn’t join Crafty Collaborations for World Card Making Day, you still can, Over 31 hours of content and some very amazing projects. Here’s the link to the playlist. I can’t recommend it enough. It was an amazing day.
Make the Inside Pretty
So, all my creativity got used up on the card front. I took the easy way out and stamped the Star of David on a Basic White panel that lines the inside of the card.
Don’t forget the envelope
Yep, I used the same star on the envelope front. I thought about stamping a row of stars on the left side of the envelope except that the stars mingled and made a pattern that made it hard to tell what they were.
I hope my card inspired you to explore the symbols and meanings behind a faith that isn’t yours. I find it enriches me to learn about other faiths. Now it’s time to see what others have done. So, grab a beverage, sit back and relax, and enjoy the hop!
